Australia’s energy needs are changing rapidly in response to climate change and new technologies which offer cleaner and cheaper sources of energy.
The energy transition is the seminal infrastructure challenge of our lifetimes, and Australian governments are moving to incentivise and bring-forward private investment in a completely new wave of infrastructure at an unprecedented scale and speed.
AEMO Services was established to help meet this critical moment in our country’s development.
A GROWING AND CHANGING ENERGY MIX
At the same time as coal-fired energy is phased out of the National Electricity Market, Australia will need to double its generation capacity to meet the demands of population growth and electrification.
THE ROLE OF PRIVATE INVESTMENT
Privately funded and operated infrastructure will play a crucial role in transitioning our network to cleaner and cheaper sources of energy.
Australia will need to invest approximately $320 billion in new energy infrastructure by 2050, and governments across the country are seeking to engage private capital in new builds for transmission, generation, firming and long-duration storage capacity.
A PURPOSE-BUILT ORGANISATION
We were established in 2021 to provide independent expertise to help governments transform Australia’s energy sector.
Policy-makers responsible for the energy transition recognise the value in appointing an impartial body to co-ordinate private investment in new infrastructure. Our independence allows us to draw on the best industry expertise to deliver the required energy at the right price for tomorrow’s energy consumers.
OUR FOUNDATIONAL ROLE
AEMO Services has been tasked with planning, assessing and guiding long-term investment in renewables under the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap.
As the NSW Consumer Trustee, our core responsibility is to design and conduct competitive tenders to bring forward built energy projects with the greatest potential to help the state meet its future needs.
We have a clear mandate to act independently and in the long-term financial interests of NSW electricity consumers.
